Wood is a key material for a sustainable built environment, storing carbon and enabling healthy spaces. As demand for sustainable construction grows, demand for wood is rising while available resources are becoming increasingly limited. Extending its use in long-lasting structural applications is therefore essential.
The UPwood project explores how waste and residual wood can be upcycled into load-bearing components instead of being used for energy. By combining AI- and robotics-supported processes with design, material flow analysis, and environmental and economic assessment, the project develops circular strategies for regional resources. In collaboration with industry partners, UPwood aims to enable scalable solutions for a regional bioeconomy.
