At Schliengerweg 31 in Basel, the canton of Basel-Stadt is building six affordable apartments and two nurseries on the ground floor as part of the 1000+ housing program. The open project competition was won by the architectural firm Solanellas Van Noten Meister with their design ‘L’Eclisse’.

The project focuses on the conscious use of resources. Reused components, such as precast concrete elements and pillars from the former Lysbüchel parking garage, characterize the construction and aesthetics of the building. Steel girders from the former Rankhof bus depot are also being given a second life in the project. The basis for the competition was an online catalogue of building components available for reuse. This catalogue was provided to the competition participants.

Zirkular GmbH is supporting the project team in defining the framework and processes that form the foundation for successful implementation of reused components in this new building. Another focus lies in finding reused material for the façade. In close consultation with the planning team, various components were selected. The components are first inspected by the architecture team in their installed state and later assessed based on dismantled samples.
