Stiftung Abendrot, the owner of the Lagerplatz site in Winterthur, wanted scientific support for its “K.118” project. As a result, it initiated the cooperation of a research team from the ZHAW Institute of Constructive Design consisting of Andreas Sonderegger, Eva Stricker (project management) and Guido Brandi with baubüro in situ (Barbara Buser, Marc Angst, Michel Massmünster). As part of the ‘Circular building’ research project, the latter produced the publication ‘Reusing building components’.
The evaluation of the K.118 project forms an essential part of the book and was carried out in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of experts.
K.118 was also worked on in various teaching programmes at the ZHAW Department of Architecture, Design and Civil Engineering. The experience gained in this process has been incorporated into the publication, as have individual contributions from researchers and lecturers.
When Stiftung Abendrot commissioned baubüro in situ with the planning of an extension in 2018, which was to be built exclusively from reused components, this was the reason for founding a new company. The baubüro grew into Zirkular GmbH – a specialist planning office for circular construction.
For Zirkular, the pioneering project was the catalyst for its foundation by the planners involved.
