Over a period of three semesters, Kerstin Müller’s visiting professorship focused intensively on the multi-layered issues of resource-efficient and circular construction. Each semester, this thematic focus was examined from a different perspective and expanded upon with overarching questions.

The content ranged from rural redensification – under the guiding principle of ‘internal development before external development’ – to the conversion of existing buildings and the reuse of existing components and materials. Topics such as resource conservation, the use of renewable building materials, the promotion of biodiversity and various forms of coexistence were addressed.

The teaching was supplemented by practical formats such as a deconstruction workshop, which enabled students to get hands-on experience with reusable building components.

The designs the students developed in the master’ course were characterised by a high degree of realism. They were in direct contact with internal and external experts from KIT, local authorities and decision-makers, which enabled a practical examination of the challenges of sustainable construction and redensification. This allowed the students to work not only creatively, but also strategically and in dialogue with real-world conditions.
