The Reuse Design Studio was carried out twice at ETH Zurich. The aim of the semester was to familiarise students with the topic of reuse in architecture by allowing them to experience the entire process themselves, from the search for building parts to the effective reinstallation of salvaged components. The hands-on approach on the construction site was complemented by presentations from a variety of actors in the field of reuse, from politics and from entrepreneurs, as well as visits to pilot projects.

In the autumn semester of 2021, the students used the harvested components to design and build 1:1 mock-ups for the conversion of the Hexis building of the SKKG Foundation in Winterthur Hegi. This allowed them to demonstrate the potential for preserving the existing building, whose fate was uncertain.
