The historic, landmark-protected commercial building at Schaffhauserstrasse 560/562 in Zurich is being revitalized by the Zurich Student Housing Foundation (SSWZ) and converted into affordable housing for students. A conscious approach to resource use is particularly important here: wherever possible, the existing structure will be preserved. In specific cases, components of the existing structure will be reinforced and upgraded if they no longer meet current standards. Any missing components on-site are supplemented with components from external renovation and demolition projects.
Zirkular supports the project by conducting a building screening to identify components suitable for reuse. Based on this, a feasibility study will be conducted with the team of planners to determine which circular construction measures are appropriate for the project and which reused building components should be implemented in the next phase. The project demonstrates how historic preservation, sustainability, and contemporary living comfort can be successfully combined – in the interest of both the students and the city of Zurich.
