The SBB Immobilien AG (Swiss Federal Railroad Real Estate Corporation) established a competition for the design and construction contract of Building “X” on the Werkstadt site in Zurich Altstetten, making strict requirements for building emissions a foundation of the brief. In order to achieve the ambitious target of 5.0 kg CO2-equ. / m2, the winning entry by Gigon Guyer Architects and partner Leuthard Building Managment consistently relied on the reuse of railway steel and catenary masts for the 7-storey steel structure. In addition, over 1000 train carriage windows and reused corrugated concrete composite panels were designed for the façade. This was complemented by reused steel stairs, protective railings and radiators.
As the specialist planner, Zirkular investigates and ensures that the high requirements of an institutional investor can also be implemented with reuse materials. The requirements of the Minergie ECO label pose a particular challenge for windows and façade components. In cooperation with specialist companies and testing companies, we continue to master these challenges with innovative solutions.
